Police hit local man with felony for repeated assault

A local man faces a felony charge after allegedly assaulting a woman then fleeing police Dec. 29.

Melvin Martin Jr., 31, of Marshalltown, is charged with hitting a 32-year-old woman on whom the court issued a no contact order, said Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department.

Martin caused a bump to the woman’s head, injured her wrist, busted her camera and TV remote and removed the batteries from her cordless phone so she could not call police, Hanken said.

When police arrived to the home on the 10 block of North 11th Avenue, Martin allegedly fled the scene.

Police charged him serious assault, enhanced to a Class D felony due to prior convictions, criminal mischief, a serious misdemeanor, interference with official acts, violation of a no contact order and obstruction of an emergency communication, all simple misdemeanors.
