ISU women win OT thriller over Texas in Big 12 opener
AMES – The Iowa State women’s basketball team scored the final eight points of overtime to topple Texas 73-65 in the Big 12 Conference opener for both squads Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
Nikki Moody’s pull-up jumper in the lane with 3:52 left in overtime gave Iowa State (10-1, 1-0) the lead for good, 67-65, and the Cyclone defense stopped the Longhorns from scoring in their last seven possessions.
Anna Prins hit back-to-back field goals including a 3-pointer to help erase a six-point Texas lead, and Iowa State led 57-53 with 32 seconds left in regulation. But the Longhorns (7-5, 0-1) rallied behind Chassidy Fussell, who made a trey of her own with 6 seconds left to force overtime.
The Cyclones made 10-of-16 free-throw attempts in the extra period, which proved to be good enough to close out Texas.
Prins finished with a game-high 17 points before fouling out with 2:10 left in overtime. Chelsea Poppens battled foul trouble, too, and scored 16 points in just 29 minutes of court time. Moody made her night a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists, while Hallie Christofferson and Brynn Williamson both chipped in eight points for the Cyclones.
Ashley Roberts, Cokie Reed and Fussell each scored 15 points apiece to lead the Longhorns, who suffered their third straight defeat.
Iowa State returns to action with its first Big 12 road trip Saturday, squaring off with Texas Tech at 7 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas.
