‘She’s a lucky girl’
It’s been 10 years since Diana Montes of Marshalltown had a baby, and she picked just the right time to have her second child.
Anaid Montes Cano was born at 7:02 p.m. Wednesday and was the first baby born in 2013 at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center.
“She’s beautiful,” Diana said. “I’ve always wanted to have another baby and she came. I don’t have to keep trying.”
Anaid weighed in at 8 pounds and is 21 inches long. She will join her father, Galdino Cano, and big brother, Jorge Montes, 10, at home.
Jorge, a fifth grader at Lenihan Intermediate School, had the same reaction his mother had when he first saw his little sister.
“She was beautiful,” he said.
Diana picked out the name Anaid – her name spelled backwards.
She wasn’t the only family member waiting for a girl. Anaid has six cousins and they are all boys, so she will feel extra special being the only girl, she said.
Dr. Richard Dowell handled the delivery and Kristi Rowley was the main labor nurse. The family received several gifts from MMSC and the MMSC Auxiliary including books, clothes, blankets, diapers and formula for having the first baby of 2013 in Marshalltown.
“She’s a lucky girl,” Diana said.
Theresa Sheer, director of the Women’s Care Center at MMSC, was happy for the family.
“It’s a very nice couple and it couldn’t happen to better people,” Sheer said.
Diana admitted it’s a little hard to remember how to handle a baby since it has been 10 years. She smiles every time she looks down at her new bundle of joy.
“Sometimes I can’t believe that I have a baby again,” Diana said. “I’m happy.”
