SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs split in NICL triangular

ACKLEY – Competing in a pair of close battles, the East Marshall/GMG wrestling team earned a split at the AGWSR Triangular Thursday.

The Mustangs dropped a 36-33 decision to Aplington-Parkersburg before regrouping with a 37-33 triumph over AGSWR.

Max Upah (126/132), Class 2A No. 6 Jay Reisetter (182), Steven Profitt (113) and Zach Underhill (120) each tallied a pair of wins for East Marshall/GMG.

Ranked No. 6 at heavyweight in Class 2A, Nate Judge dropped a 4-1 decision to Class 1A’s top-rated Brandon McCracken of Aplington-Parkersburg.

AGWSR’s Clay Meinders, rated ninth in Class 1A, pinned the Mustangs’ Jaryd Young in 1:37 at 195.

The Mustangs will compete at the Allie Morrison Duals in Marshalltown Saturday at 9 a.m., while the Cougars travel to Fort Dodge that same day for the St. Edmonds Duals beginning at 10 a.m.

Bobcat freshmen launch Boone

BOONE – Dialing it in from deep, the Marshalltown freshman boys basketball team dispatched Boone 72-50 on the road Thursday.

Tony Smith hit 5-of-6 threes to score 24 points, while Ben Weatherman added 11 points hitting 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Trevor Dolezal added eight points, while Kyler Ladehoff (7), Drake Slifer (6) and Michael Chavez (5) also chipped in.

The Bobcats (6-4) host Des Moines East Friday at 6:15 p.m. before facing Urbandale on the road Saturday at noon.

MHS sophomore boys top Toreadors

BOONE – Led by a pair of double-digit scorers, the Marshalltown sophomore boys basketball team defeated the Boone junior varsity squad 53-46 Thursday.

Marco Yepez led the Bobcats to their second win of the season with 16 points and Aaron Hauser had 12. Michael Schrempf added nine points, while Grant Thimesch and Brandin Chalopek added seven and six respectively.

The Bobcats (2-8) host Des Moines East tonight at 6:15 p.m.
