Annual Hy-Vee My Y Tri set for Feb. 23
Amateur triathlon athletes will have an opportunity to display their skills early in the new year at the 10th annual Hy-Vee My Y Tri.
The first wave is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m., Feb. 23 at the Y, 108 Washington St.
Named for its sponsor, Iowa’s Hy-Vee Inc. and host Y, the triathlon is a competitive athletic event where individuals or teams swim, bicycle and run.
The event is unique by its indoor format.
All adult contestants swim for seven minutes, bicycle on a stationary bike 18 minutes and run 15 minutes.
Up to three people may be on a team – one to swim, bike and run respectively.
Distance will be calculated for each participant or team, and winners will be determined by total distance traveled.
New this year is a separate category for area youth.
Contestants will swim for five minutes, bicycle on a stationary bike for 10 minutes and run for 10 minutes.
“The Hy-Vee Triathlon in Des Moines has a separate youth division and it is successful, so we are trying out a similar format here,” said Bianca Greazel, event coordinator and Y development director. “We hope the youth division encourages families to participate too.”
As with the previous nine contests, the event is primarily designed to raise funds for the Y’s Partner with Youth program.
PWY enables the Y to provide financial assistance to children and families who otherwise couldn’t afford to become members due to lack of funds. No one is denied access to membership because of the inability to pay.
Previous triathlons have netted the Y approximately $2,500 which is melded with funds raised by Y volunteers during an annual campaign.
Private donations from individuals and businesses in the Marshalltown area make up the lion’s share.
In 2009, the Y provided more than $250,000 in direct financial assistance for memberships. This included scholarship memberships (free memberships) for children and financial assistance for families (that may include children).
The 2013 event celebrates the sixth anniversary of Hy-Vee Inc. co-sponsorship and active participation by the local store.
Many staff compete and volunteer.
Participants will have an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to enter a drawing to win one of four 2013 Hy-Vee Triathlon entries, held in Des Moines.
Greazel said medals will be awarded to first place male and female winners overall.
Winning team members each receive a medal.
Medals are also awarded to male and female first place finishers in each age division.
Winners are determined by total distance traveled and ties are broken by bike distance and then run distance.
Last year, Greg Graham took top individual and male participant honors, while Sara Nichols earned the highest female score.
Team Scottie Puff Jr., comprised of Elizabeth Barske, Nate Menuey and Glenn VanStaalduine took top team honors for the second consecutive year.
Entry fees are $30 for individuals and $50 per team by Feb. 15. Afterwards, registration is $45 for individuals and $65 per team.
Registration forms are available online or may be returned or mailed to the Y.
Waves and starting times will posted on the Y website, www.ymca-ywca.org, Feb. 20.
“Registrations have been coming in at a good pace, and I’m excited about coordinating the event the first time,” Greazel said. “And I am looking forward to working with our many Y volunteers and outstanding participants.”
