Burglar pleads guilty to seven felonies
A man charged with six counts of burglary pleaded guilty on Thursday to seven felonies associated with that crime.
John Sims Jr., 33, of Marshalltown, pleaded to three counts of second-degree burglary, Class C felonies, three counts of third-degree burglary, and second-degree theft, Class D felonies.
Police originally also charged Sims with fifth-degree theft, a simple misdemeanor, possession of burglar’s tools, an aggravated misdemeanor, and ongoing criminal conduct, a Class B felony.
DNA evidence tied Sims to a July burglary at a home on Harmony Drive that was part of a rash of burglaries in the area. After police brought Sims in for questioning in August, he fled to Minnesota. Police arrested him Oct. 11 with the help of the Duluth police department.
Task force arrests local man for pot trafficking
The Mid-Iowa Drug Task Force arrested a Marshalltown man Thursday night for allegedly trafficking marijuana.
Matthew Tyda, 37, of Marshalltown, is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, a Class D felony, possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor, and prohibited acts, an aggravated misdemeanor.
Det. Joel Phillips, with the Mid-Iowa Drug Task Force, said Tyda was using his home on the 100 block of South 16th Street to move the drugs. Phillips would not disclose the exact amount of marijuana police charged Tyda with having, saying only that it was over “a user amount.”
The court ordered Tyda to complete a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of his release. He is being held on $5,000 cash only bond.
Dr. Jennifer Beaty and Dr. Ryan Vlasin are the parents of a son, Sam Joseph Vlasin, born Dec. 19 at 2:55 p.m. at The Methodist Women’s Hospital in Omaha. He arrived seven weeks early and weighed 5 pounds and 7 ounces and measured 18.75 inches. Grandparents are Dr. Larry and Kathy Beaty, of Marshalltown, and Larry and Carol Vlasin, of Crete, Neb.
Rauland and Lydia Arevalo, of Marshalltown, are the parents of a daughter, Piper Lorraine Arevalo, born at 5:11 p.m. Dec. 20 at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. Piper joins brother, Rowan Arevalo. Grandparents are Mark and JoDee Rohde, Debra and Edward Brown and Tony and Elba Vasquez.

On Wednesday, Amber Lyn Smith, 704 N. 4th Ave., reported damage to both driver side doors on a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus while parked at her residence. Estimated value of damage was $500.
On Wednesday, Paul Dwight Butcher, 1205 Fremont St., was arrested for interference with official acts.
On Wednesday, Jan. 2, Donald E. Liger, 924 N. 5th Ave., was arrested for failure to comply with the sex offender registry regulations.
On Tuesday, a car driven by Van Tha Bik, 111 N. 7th St. Apt. #1, was entering the traveled portion of West Church Street from a parked position when it collided with a pickup driven by Rocio Cruz, 107 S. 4th St., which was westbound on Church Street. No injuries were reported. Bik was cited for unsafe starting of stopped vehicle and violation of instruction permit. Damage to the Bik car was estimated at $1,500 while the Cruz pickup received an estimated $500 in damage.
