PREP WRESTLING: Gomez, Vandegrift lead ‘Cat grapplers

CEDAR RAPIDS – Marshalltown seniors Matt Vandegrift and Pedro Gomez both went 2-1 and both placed at the J-Hawk Invitational in Cedar Rapids on Saturday.

Gomez earned two pins in his first two matches at heavyweight and then was pinned in the championship match by undefeated Dean Broghammer of West Deleware.

Vandegrift had two wins at 195 as well and lost to Jacyn Goebel (28-1) of West Deleware in the championship match.

The only other wrestler who walked away with a placing was Derek Mann, who placed sixth at 170 pounds. Mann was 2-2 on the day. Zach Slocum was 1-2 at 138 pounds.

Lutes takes first at South Hardin Invite

ELDORA – Tyler Lutes went 3-0 and claimed first place, while Luke Asche and Carter King both finished second during wrestling action at the BCLUW-South Hardin Invitational.

Lutes had two pins in his three wins to claim the title at 160. King’s day included a major decision, while Asche also went 2-1.

Third-place finishes were claimed by Blake Cooper at 195 and Sawyer Anderson at 126. Deonce Cushinberry was fourth at 220.

Cooper lost his first match by fall but then recorded two straight pins and a major decision to finish the day 3-1. Anderson was 1-1 on the day while Cushinberry was 2-2 with two pins.

Judge’s first-place tally leads EM/GMG

HUDSON – Nate Judge led the East Marshall/Green Mountain-Garwin wrestling team to a third-place finish at the Hudson Invitational on Saturday.

Judge, the fifth ranked wrestler in Class 2A, earned two pins on the day and took first place at heavyweight.

Luke Johnson, Zach Underhill and Dalton Beadle all finished third on the day as EM/GMG scored 135 points and trailed champion Charles City and Don Bosco.

Underhill went 2-1 with two pins at 120, while Johnson went 1-1 with a pin at 195.

Beadle earned two wins by fall at 160 and went 2-1 on the day.
