Reading program kickoff is Wednesday at library

The planning stage of the Spread the Words- Read by 3rd effort to boost reading levels in Marshalltown helped the town achieve All-America City status last year.

The next phase will be the enactment of that plan.

“Our work has just begun,” said Sue Martin, who has led this effort along with Arlene McAtee.

A community kickoff for the program is planned from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Marshalltown Public Library. Martin said they hope to share ideas to help children in the community and also update the community on the latest with the effort. The free event is open to the public.

Light refreshments will be provided and book or monetary donations are accepted to help with the program.

“We’re really hoping to open up an opportunity for community members who heard about this effort and want to know how to get involved,” McAtee said.

The program has a goal to have 90 percent of third graders in Marshalltown proficient in reading. The three areas of focus are increasing school attendance rates, cutting down on summer learning loss and helping with school readiness.
