Mother daughter tandem arrested for theft
A mother and daughter face theft charges for allegedly changing the bar codes on items at Menards earlier their month.
Renae Seelye, 37, of Le Grand, is charged with third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor, and her mother, Katherine Seelye, 56, of Ferguson, is charged with fifth-degree theft.
Capt. Brian Batterson, with the Marshalltown Police Department, said on Jan. 10, Renae went into Menards and swapped the barcode on a $380 surveillance camera system to read $45. When Menards employees confronted Renae at the register, she told them she needed to go get a credit card to pay for the item.
Roughly an hour and a half later, Batterson said, Renae returned with her mother and attempted to steal another similar item valued at $400. Two prior theft convictions enhanced Renae’s charge to an aggravated misdemeanor.
Police made reports of the arrest available Tuesday.
