SPORTS SHORTS: Storm grapplers go 2-0 in La Porte City
LA PORTE CITY – Backed by five pins and three forfeits, the South Hardin-BCLUW wrestling team bested Jesup on Thursday night and then also got a strong performance against East Marshall/GMG.
The Storm used three consecutive pins and five pins in all to beat Jesup 48-36 and also won four of the final six matches to rally past East Marshall/GMG 39-33.
Tyler Lutes (160), Luke Asche (138) and Sawyer Anderson (126) all went 2-0 with Lutes and Asche both recording two pins on the night.
Deonce Cushinberry earned a win by pin and a win by forfeit in his two matches at 220 and Carter King also got a win by pin and a win by forfeit at 152. Heavyweight Justin Westphal earned a win by disqualification against East Marshall/GMG and then was given a forfeit against Jesup.
Jay Reisetter, Steven Proffitt, Zach Underhill and Marco Rodriguez all earned pins for East Marshall/GMG against SH/BCLUW. Talon Roseland also scored a 10-4 decision over Mac Simpson.
No. 10 Trojans score two easy victories
ACKLEY – The 10th ranked West Marshall wrestling team took advantage of four forfeits and scored bonus points in four matches during a 48-24 win over AGWSR on Thursday night. Then the Trojans recorded six pins and were handed six forfeits in a 75-6 win over Gladbrook-Reinbeck/North Tama-Grundy Center.
Top-ranked Kyle Blocker was given two forfeits on the night, while fellow ranked wrestlers Tanner Arnold (No. 6 at 152) won a decision and landed a forfeit and Dale Hilleman (No. 6 at 160) won a match by pin and won another match by forfeit.
Cole Needham also earned a pin against GRNT-GC and his forfeit win came against AGWSR at 113.
The Trojans began the match against AGWSR with three straight pins and then Hilleman won by fall to give West Marshall a big lead early.
West Marshall’s six pins against GRNT-GC were recorded by Kolby Steiert, James Long, Blade Jackson, Needham, Nic Price and Jake Goecke.
AGWSR got wins by Austin Williams, Clay Meinders, Kolton Fryslie, Miguel Reyes and Dakota Schwebke in the match against West Marshall.
The only win for GRNT-GC against West Marshall came at 132 when Omar Martinez pinned Chad Berrey.
Boerm scores 22 in Redhawks’ victory
HUDSON – Mitchell Boerm scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds, Nolan Hefty and Jacob Wrage each added 12 and the North Tama boys’ basketball team won a close game with Hudson on Thursday, winning 59-55.
North Tama trailed by two after one quarter but then took the lead for good in the second with a four-point advantage.
The Redhawks and Hudson played a close game throughout but North Tama wrapped up another win by sinking free throws down the stretch and by taking care of the ball.
Hudson was led by 16 points from Ben Henderson, while Antwain Strong added 12.
