New sign pops up in Garwin

GARWIN – It’s been years in the making but the new electronic sign is up and nearly ready to be turned on in central Garwin.

The LED sign project was led by four groups in town including the Garwin Revitalization Committee, the Garwin Lions Club, GMG Schools and the city of Garwin.

The sign cost $20,000 and was purchased from Dragon Fly Signs, based in California. It was erected last month at the corner of Center and Third streets.

Town leaders are waiting on the electrical connections to be put in place before turning the sign on. Mark Polich, principal of GMG Secondary School and one of the community leaders on the project, expects it to be up and running in the next two weeks.

The community raised more than $20,000 and will use the leftover money to pay for landscaping around the sign when the ground thaws in the spring.

“I could not believe how everything fell together,” Polich said. “We just had a great turnout of support from people and companies that donated. We would like to thank everyone for all of the support.”

The sign will highlight events in town including school events, musical entertainment at the city park and other special happenings and gatherings. It appears the anticipation has been building in town and they are ready for the sign to be operational.

“People have been wondering when it will be turned on,” Polich said.

Polich feels the town will take great pride in the sign.

“They will have even more (pride) when we get the landscaping done,” Polich said.
