PREP WRESTLING: West Marshall matmen claim two titles at I-35

TRURO – The Class 1A No. 5-ranked West Marshall wrestling team finished with two champions among nine placewinners at the Rich Gray Classic hosted Saturday by Interstate 35 High School.

Cole Needham at 113 pounds and top-ranked Kyle Blocker at 138 emerged atop their respective brackets for the Trojans. Sixth-ranked wrestlers Tanner Arnold (152) and Dale Hilleman (160) reached the finals before falling in decisions.

Blocker ran his season record to 40-0 with four wins, the first two by fall and two more by decision. He edged Eddyville-Blakesburg’s sixth-ranked Jason Crosby, 2-1 in double overtime, in the finals.

Needham’s big win came in the semifinals, an 8-2 decision over 2A No. 9 JD Sliger of Central Springs. Needham (33-5) then ousted Ryan Cale from Cardinal of Eldon, 8-5, in the finals.

Arnold’s final-round setback was a 7-4 loss to 2A No. 4 Griffin Osing from Albia, and Hilleman lost 13-6 to 2A No. 3 Brett Leshen, also from Albia.

Also for the Trojans, Jared Johnson (145) and Christopher Sjoblom (195) placed fourth, Brandon Overman (182) was fifth, while CJ Berrey (132) and William Ohrt (170) were sixth.
