Drake takes S. Illinois out of its game
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Chris Hines scored 12 points and Richard Carter hit a key 3-pointer in the final minute as the Drake men’s basketball team defeated Southern Illinois 61-56 Wednesday night.
Southern Illinois (8-13, 1-9 Missouri Valley) overcame a 10-point second-half deficit and tied the game at 54-54 when Josh Swan hit 1 of 2 free throws with 1:33 remaining. But Carter followed with a 3 with 1:05 left and Drake (10-11, 4-6) hit 4 of 6 free throws the rest of the way to close the game on a 7-2 run.
Jordan Clarke added 11 points and Joey King had 10 for the Bulldogs, who hit 8 of 15 3-point attempts and shot 52 percent overall from the field. That helped overcome 20 turnovers.
“We showed poise and composure down the stretch and made the plays when it counted with Richard’s shot and making free throws,” said Drake coach Mark Phelps. “More importantly we got stops at the other end.”
Desmar Jackson had 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Salukis, who have lost five straight. T.J. Lindsay added 11 points and Swan had 10.
“The strength of their team is driving the ball and using ball screens,” Phelps said of SIU. “We switched to a zone to slow it down and make them more of a passing team than a driving team and that really helped us.”
Drake returns home on Saturday to host Indiana State in a 6:35 p.m. game inside the Knapp Center in Des Moines.
