John W. Jones Jr. “Jack”, 89, of Marshalltown, Iowa, died Monday, January 28, 2013 at State Center Nursing and Rehab Center.
Visitation for Jack will be held from 2:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home where his family will be present to greet friends. Jack was born March, 19, 1923 in Marshalltown Iowa, the son of John W. Jones and Mabel (Clemens) Jones. He was raised and educated in the Marshalltown school district. Jack enlisted in the Navy on January 2, 1941 at the age of 17. He was stationed on the USS Tennessee at Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7, 1941; the sirens that sounded that morning were not a drill and our country went to war. He served our country honorably during the duration of WWII seeing actions in both Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was united in marriage to Louise Catherine Knoll in Marshalltown, Iowa on February 28, 1946. To that union, six children were born. He lost her to death in December of 1977. On February 6, 1987 Jack was united in marriage to Julie Spence at Sacred Heart Church in Oelwein, Iowa. Jack was employed for 10 years at Studebaker in South Bend, Indiana. He then moved his family back to Marshalltown, Iowa where he worked for 29 years at Iowa Electric Light and Power Co., retiring in 1984. Jack had many passions in life including hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, winters in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas as well as all of Jack and Julie’s adventures and travels on their Goldwing motorcycle. In November of 2009, Jack was able to be a special part of the Honor Flight to Washington DC. Their most recent trip was their dream adventure to Alaska escorted by daughter-in-law Gloria Jones.
Jack is survived by his wife, Julie; children: Cheryl (Rex) Gunderson, John W. Jones III (Dee Koch), Kim (Kendall) McCrary, Jerri Ann Frye, Gloria Jones, Co Crew, Kathy (Bob) Kelly, Julianne (Tom) Schmitz, Lori (Bret) Pirillo, Mary (Bernie) Thomas, Jim (Carolyn) Spence and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty; wife, Louise; two sons: Gordon “Butch” Jones, and Jeffery Carroll Jones.
