BOYS BASKETBALL: Rebels get first piece of league title since 2008

REINBECK – Zach Pierce had a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team to a 52-41 victory over South Tama and the Rebels’ first share of the NICL West Division title since 2007-08.

Camden Kickbush added nine points and Jacob Smoldt had seven for the Rebels (14-4, 13-1), who face three NICL East teams this coming week. G-R shares the West Division crown with West Marshall, which has won at least a share of the league title in each of its five seasons in the conference.

South Tama (6-13, 5-9) got 13 points from Grant Koch to lead the way, and Jose Fonseca added 10 points and nine rebounds. Ian Slagle matched his season best with eight points.

The Trojans host Class 3A No. 10 Grinnell on Tuesday night.

Pella Christian 77, Colo-NESCO 45

COLO – Pella Christian jumped out to a 50-15 halftime lead and eased to its ninth straight win, a 77-45 triumph over Colo-NESCO in a non-conference contest.

Austin Ver Meer, the Eagles’ 6-foot-6 senior center, had a double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead Pella Christian (15-4). Sebastian Baugh added 17 points and Caleb Morgan contributed nine.

Colo-NESCO got team-highs of 25 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists from Brandyn Niemeyer.

Cole Osbun contributed six points and Jake Webb had five for the Royals (12-9), who close out the regular season with Tuesday’s make-up Iowa Star Conference game at Meskwaki.

Roland-Story 69, Grundy Center 41

GRUNDY CENTER – Three players scored in double figures to lead fast-starting Roland-Story toa 69-41 non-conference win over Grundy Center Saturday.

Ryan Skaar had 17 points, Zach Hovik added 16 and Adam Shorkey matched his season-high with 15 for the Norsemen (12-8).

Grundy Center (5-16) sustained its fifth straight defeat. Riley Wells scored a season-high 15 points while Ryon Appel had eight points. Dylan Lyman led the way with 11 rebounds.

The Spartans end the regular season on Monday at Wapsie Valley.


BCLUW 41, Grundy Center 40

CONRAD – Dylan Lyman scored a season-high 22 points but it was not enough to keep the Grundy Center boys’ basketball team from losing its fourth straight, a 41-40 NICL West Division setback against BCLUW late Friday.

The host Comets (5-11, 4-9) outscored Grundy Center 28-18 in the second half to come back from a 22-13 halftime deficit and get the regular-season split with the Spartans (5-15, 3-11).

Lyman shot 11-of-17 from the field before fouling out. Brady Hook added seven points, six rebounds and four steals, while Elliot Eggleston had five points and six assists. Riley Wells had a team-high 11 rebounds for Grundy Center.

No statistics for BCLUW were reported. The Comets play a non-conference game Monday at Gilbert, make up an NICL West clash with East Marshall Tuesday, and on Friday plays at GMG.

Meskwaki 66, Valley Lutheran 59

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT – Meskwaki edged ahead and held off Valley Lutheran for a 66-59 non-conference win here Friday night.

The Warriors (11-9) won their third straight and will host AGWSR on Monday night. Meskwaki makes up its home game against Colo-NESCO on Tuesday to close out Iowa Star Conference and regular season play.

John Stone scored a season-high 26 points on 12-of-19 shooting and had 17 rebounds to lead Valley Lutheran (1-17). Isaiah Armbrecht made seven 3-pointers and matched his season-best with 23 points.
