BOYS BASKETBALL: Boerm drops 30 on Union, North Tama continues tear
LA PORTE CITY – Mitchell Boerm matched his season-high with 30 points and the Class 1A No. 8 North Tama boys’ basketball team tacked on to its winningest season ever with a 67-54 victory over Union Community in Tuesday’s regular season finale.
Nolan Hefty had nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds, Dalton Hulme had nine points and Jacob Wrage tallied eight points and nine assists for the Redhawks (21-1), who outscored Union 19-8 in the third quarter to pull away for their 11th straight win.
Paul Kaufmann added six points and Brent Billerbeck five for North Tama, which has a first-round bye in District 8 play. The Redhawks will host either BCLUW or Valley Lutheran on Feb. 14 in Traer.
Jay Scheel scored 22 points and Bo Bader added 15 for Union (7-11).
Gladbrook-Reinbeck 46, Denver 32
REINBECK – Zach Pierce had a double-double in his third straight game to help lead Gladbrook-Reinbeck to a 46-32, cross-NICL victory over Denver.
Pierce finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Rebels (15-5), who bounced back successfully from a 64-62 loss at Hudson a night earlier. Jacob Smoldt added 10 points, while Camden Kickbush charted nine points, nine rebounds and six assists.
McCoy Matthias had eight points to pace Denver (4-14).
G-R closes regular-season play Thursday night at Wapsie Valley.
Wapsie Valley 60, Grundy Center 50
GRUNDY CENTER – Mitchell Boevers scored a game-high 27 points in leading Wapsie Valley past Grundy Center, 60-50, in a cross-NICL contest.
The Warriors (11-8) trailed 20-19 at the half but rallied with a 23-12 third-quarter advantage. Nick Gaul chipped in 18 points for Wapsie Valley.
Lane Bangasser made five 3-pointers en route to a team-high 17 points for Grundy Center (5-17), which suffered its sixth straight loss to close the regular season. Riley Wells added nine points and 10 rebounds, and Ryon Appel also scored nine points. Dylan Lyman added eight and Brady Hook had seven for the Spartans, who face CAL in their Class 1A District 8 opener next Monday in Grundy Center.
Grinnell 85, South Tama 50
TAMA – Joe Schmidt scored 24 points and Joe Nowasell had 22 to lead Class 3A No. 9 Grinnell to an 85-50 victory over South Tama in a preview of a first-round postseason pairing.
Eli Dunne added 15 points for the Tigers (16-3), who won their eighth straight.
Sam Kuhter and Brad Evans both scored 12 points to lead South Tama (6-14), which sustained its sixth consecutive defeat. Jose Fonseca added nine points and Clay Waterbury six for the Trojans.
South Tama closes out the regular season next Tuesday with a home game against Benton Community, and STC goes to Grinnell for their district opener Feb. 18.
BCLUW 50, East Marshall 42
CONRAD – Three players scored in double figures and BCLUW completed the regular season sweep of East Marshall with a 50-42 victory in Tuesday’s NICL West Division finale.
Grant Frazer totaled 14 points, Wyatt Gunderson had 12 and Lane Caster 10 for BCLUW (6-12, 5-9).
Mitch Berry scored a game-high 20 points to lead East Marshall (3-17, 3-11). Walker Steward added seven and Josh Wilson six for the Mustangs, who got outscored 17-7 in the second and 18-6 in the third. East Marshall answered with a 23-7 advantage in the fourth quarter that was just not enough.
The Mustangs host Denver on Thursday while BCLUW plays Friday at GMG.
Dike-New Hartford 49, West Marshall 47
DIKE – Dike-New Hartford beat the buzzer with the go-ahead field goal for a 49-47 win over West Marshall in cross-NICL play.
Sean Morgan led the host Wolverines (13-9) with 19 points and Carson Parker had 17.
Duncan Ferch and Christian Vis scored 13 points apiece to pace West Marshall (16-5). Reggie Gradwell added nine points and Matt Van Metre had six points and five rebounds.
The Trojans open Class 2A District 6 play at home on Feb. 14, entertaining the winner of Monday’s first-round pairing between these Wolverines and East Marshall.
