Child endangerment charge for Des Moines woman
A Des Moines woman faces assault and child endangerment charges after allegedly hitting her boyfriend in the presence of their 2-year-old daughter.
Police arrested Starr Moeipo Makua, 21, just after midnight Wednesday and charged her with simple assault, a simple misdemeanor, and child endangerment without injury, an aggravated misdemeanor, said Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department.
Makua allegedly repeatedly punched her boyfriend in the face at his home on the 300 block of Sharon Avenue.
Police contacted the Domestic Violence Assault Center and Department of Human Services.

On Sunday, Timothy Dean Ebersole, 311 S. 4th St., was arrested on a Polk County warrant for failure to appear for child support.
On Saturday, Justin Lee Davis, 2306 Yates Ave., was arrested for failure to appear.
On Saturday, Shonna Marie Jenkins, 1401 S. 7th Ave. #203, was arrested for failure to file SR-22 insurance and driving while license is suspended.
On Feb. 1, Peter Kyaw Thaung, 1208 W. State St., was arrested for driving under suspension, improper brake light and operating while intoxicated-second offense.
On Sunday, a pickup driven by Nathan Michael Callahan, 2414 170th St., was northbound on Wallace Avenue when it went out of control and skidded into the west ditch where it came to rest on its right side causing functional damage. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Callahan pickup was estimated at $3,000.
On Saturday, a car driven by Veronica Vargas Rivas, of Waterloo, was southbound on Wallace Avenue when a tire hit the snow covered shoulder causing the driver to lose control and she over-steered the car causing the it to enter the east ditch where it rolled before coming to a stop. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Vargas Rivas car was estimated at $15,000.
On Feb. 1, a vehicle driven by Brandon John Campbell, 1005 S. 2nd St., was southbound on Wallace Avenue stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with the Garwin Road when it proceeded into the intersection where it collided with a car driven by Jessica Lynn Chizek, 605 N. 16th St., which was traveling east on the Garwin Road. Chizek and passenger Kamrin Chizek were possibly injured, but were not treated at the scene or transported. Campbell was cited for failure to yield on through highway, driving while suspended and failure to prove security against liability. Damage to the Campbell vehicle was estimated at $3,500 while the Chizek car receive an estimated $4,500 in damage.
On Wednesday, a car driven by Damie Kay Niederhauser, of Le Grand, was northbound on North Prairie Street when it attempted to turn left onto East Fremont Street and collided with a vehicle driven by a female juvenile, of Le Grand, that was at the corner. No injuries were reported. Niederhauser was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to the Niederhauser car was estimated at $1,000 while the other vehicle sustained an estimated $1,500 in damage.
On Monday, a car driven by Hattie Bell Gersema, 215 N. 2nd Ave. Apt. #1, was westbound on 145 Street when it went out of control on the gravel and entered the north ditch where it overturned and came to rest on its roof. Gersema was transported to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center with possible injuries. Damage to the Gersema car was estimated at $4,000.
On Jan. 28, a maintenance vehicle driven by David Francis Schulte, 204 Lincoln Valley Dr., was westbound on 330th Street clearing the road and went to turn left onto Canfield Avenue when the rear wheels slid into an unattended, parked car that had been left in the intersection because it had gotten stuck on the ice. No injuries were reported. Damage to the unattended, parked car was estimated at $1,500.

William Osborne, 202 S. 3rd Ave. Apt. #2, made an initial appearance with counsel, Darrell Meyer, on a delivery of a Schedule I controlled substance charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to represent in this case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 25. Osborne was released through the Department of Correctional Services and is to contact them within 24 hours to sign a pre-trial release form. The court ordered the he obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of today’s date. It was further ordered that Osborne be photographed and fingerprinted by either the Marshalltown Police Department or the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office within 24 hours.
Rachelle Mann, 112 N. 3rd St. Apt. #4, made an initial appearance on two counts of a theft-fifth degree charge. She pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is set for 9 a.m. on March 12. The court appointed Laura Sopher to represent her in these cases. Mann was released on her own recognizance.
Jaime Lee Wheeler, 301 Plaza Heights Rd., made an initial appearance on a serious domestic assault charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle the case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 25. Wheeler was released on her own recognizance. A no-contact order was issued for the protected party.
Todd Lynch, of Green Mountain, made an initial appearance on a parole violation charge. Jeffrey Hazen, previously appointed, will continue with this case. A parole revocation hearing will be scheduled by Lynch’s parole officer as his calendar permits. No bond was allowed in this case.
Starr Moeipo Kuuipoikamakaopua Makua, of Des Moines, made an initial appearance on a violation of a no-contact order charge and a criminal mischief-fifth degree charge. The court appointed Jennifer Meyer to represent Makua in these cases. The preliminary hearing and contempt hearing will be held at the same time, 3 p.m. on Feb. 22. Bond is set at $1,000 cash only. The court ordered that if Makua possessed any firearms or ammunition she is make arrangements upon release with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office to surrender them. A no-contact order was issued for the protected parties.

On Tuesday, Andres Lugo-Cortez, 506 N. 3rd St., reported the theft of a purse or wallet and contents from the residence. Estimated value of loss was $376.
On Wednesday, Jaime Lea Wheeler, 301 Plaza Heights Rd., was arrested for domestic abuse-serious assault.
On Tuesday, Marissa Ann McStockard, 424 Union St., was arrested for theft-third degree (enhanced).
