Judy was born on March 31, 1942, in Marshalltown, to Donald Joseph Gaffney and Jane Marie Worden. She attended St. Mary’s school graduating in 1960 and continued her education at Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids as a music major. She remained active throughout her life in music circles, playing piano, organ, guitar and was a member of Tuesday Musical. Judy taught piano for over 40 years and shared her love of music with young and old. Judy and her husband have traveled to England, Bermuda, Hawaii, Italy, France, with the most rewarding-going on several pilgrimages to Medjugorje in Bosnia. The most unique experience was living on a canal boat for one week in Wales. Judy’s life has been filled with activities: gardening, sewing, knitting, reading, cooking and writing music. Many gardening interests involved the Master Gardener program with four landscape projects designed for Union Grove State Park. Her most proud accomplishment was the raising of four children with her husband John and loving their fifteen wonderful grandchildren. She has been a Third Order Franciscan for 19 years, and served as Spiritual Assistant for the fraternity. Because of her interest in ancestry, she was able to join her grandmother and great aunt as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Judy will be missed by her husband, John, married 43 years; brother, Jerry (Cheri) Gaffney; nieces, Morgan and Taylor Gaffney; daughter, Jami (John) Meilahn, Megan, Mitch, Marli, Max and Madeline; daughter, Jill (Dave) Thorman, Dylan and Mason; daughter, Melissa (Gary) Sargent, Bridget, Natalie, Ross and Carrie Heddens and Joe and Claire Sargent; son, Michael (Abbey) Egnew, Jack, Addison, Cole and Norah. She is also survived by her beloved cat Squeeks who brought her much comfort for the past 14 years.
Judy’s father and mother preceded her death in 2012.
Memorials are to be made to the Marshalltown Area Catholic School building fund.
