MHS boys third, girls 10th at CIC bowling

DES MOINES – The Marshalltown boys’ bowling team leapfrogged two teams with strong Baker games to lift the Bobcats from fifth place to third at Thursday’s Central Iowa Conference meet at Plaza Lanes.

MHS had trouble recovering from a low total after the individual rounds. Grant Whitmore led the Bobcats with a 202-236-439 series, while Brett Wax (416) and Floyd Speck (407) also put together a pair of 200 games. Dacoda Ewalt added a 391 total and a 341 for Kyle Bartles rounded it out for the ‘Cats.

Whitmore placed seventh overall, Wax was 12th and Speck 16th.

Only CIC meet champion Johnston outscored the Bobcats in the Baker games. The Dragons totaled 3,207 for first place, Valley slipped in for third (3,054) and MHS totaled 3,039 for third.

Valley’s Adam Morse closed with a perfect game for a 268-300-568 total and meet medalist honors.

The Bobcat girls came in last out of 10 teams in the inagural CIC meet, totaling 2,003 pins.

Tia Vergauwen led MHS in finishing 20th overall with a 178-137-315 series. Mercedies Bills added 282, Kathleen Ferrin rolled 252, Lily Neuan a 241 and Samantha Tocheri a 223.

Mason City claimed the team title with 2,781, Fort Dodge was second (2,688) and Ankeny third (2,628). The champion Mohawks boasted the top two individuals in Rebecca Broerman (492) and Mariah Payne (486).
