Times-Republican recognized with 18 newspaper awards
DES MOINES – The Times-Republican was recognized for general excellence and community leadership among 18 awards it received at the Iowa Newspaper Association’s Awards Banquet Friday night.
Presentations were made to winners of the INA 2013 Better Newspaper Contests, which were judged by the South Dakota Newspaper Association. The Times-Republican is a Daily Class 1 newspaper, based on circulation. It earned a third place award for General Excellence and Total Newspaper Design.
The newspaper was recognized with a first place award for Community Leadership for spearheading the Not In Our Town anti-bullying initiative. It also
won first place for Best Editorial Pages , first place for Coverage of Education and third place for Coverage of Agriculture.
Abigail Pelzer, managing editor, won first place for Best News story “Support for Salvador” about an undocumented immigrant facing deportation.
Sports Editor Ross Thede won first place and second place for Best Sports Photo. His first place photo captured an MCC softball pitcher going after a pop-up ball and his second place photo captured a Bobcats soccer player lofting a bicycle kick past a defender at Leonard Cole Field.
Luke Stalzer, staff writer, won second place for Best Breaking News Photo “Historic building gutted” following an arson fire on Main Street.
Staff Reporter Andrew Potter won third place for Master Columnist for his his weekly column “Anything Goes.” Copy Editor Wes Burns won second place for Best Blog “A Stranger’s Opinion” and Troy Hyde, assistant sports editor, won third place for his blog “From the Stands.”
Travis Hines, former T-R sports reporter, was recognized with a second place award for Best Sports Story, a series “Eying the Tigers” about the Marshalltown Community College’s athletic department.
Rick Deines, contributing sports writer, won third place for Best Sports Columnist for “So long, Joe” a tribute to Joe August, former golf club professional at Elmwood Country Club.
The T-R was recognized with three advertising awards including third place for Best Ad featuring furnishings, appliances or hardware, second place for Best Ad featuring miscellaneous and third place for Best Ad idea for a community promotion of event.
