DISTRICT WRESTLING: AGWSR’s Meinders headed to first state tournament
PARKERSBURG – AGWSR sophomore Clay Meinders is headed to the Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships.
The sophomore went 1-1 on the day and placed second overall at 195 pounds Saturday during Class 1A District 6 action at Aplington-Parkersburg High School.
The Cougars were 11th in the team standings with 20 points, but both Hunter Wagner and Levi Stockdale both fell short in their efforts to claim state berths.
Don Bosco won the team title with 104.5 points, while Sumner-Fredericksburg was second at 88, Aplington-Parkersburg was third with 68 and North Fayette (61) and Turkey Valley (48) also were in the top five.
Meinders will take a 36-8 record into state. He beat Nashua-Plainfield’s Dakota Hurd 6-3 in the opening round and then lost to South Winneshiek’s Chris Brinks (26-1) by fall in the championship match.
Stockdale took third at 160 after going 1-1 on the day. He lost his opener 5-3 and then beat Tyler Sawyer of Turkey Valley, 7-3, in the consolation match. However, he did not get a chance to wrestleback and settled for third.
Wagner went 0-2 at 145 and ended his season at 29-17.
The Iowa State Wrestling Championships begin Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena. The Class 1A portion of the tournament will kick off at 9 a.m. with first round and first-round consolation round matchups.
