GIRLS BASKETBALL: Jesup gets back at G-R in Class 2A regional opener
REINBECK – Jesup junior post Alissa Brown scored a career-high 43 points and the J-Hawks turned the tides on the Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team for a 69-65 victory in the opening round of Class 2A Region 3 play Saturday night.
The host Rebels had won 62-56 at Jesup on Jan. 22, but Brown managed to stay out of foul trouble in Jesup’s return trip to G-R and dominated the game.
Lindsey Kite chipped in 12 points for the J-Hawks (10-11), who will travel to face 10th-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg (17-3) on Tuesday night.
Erin Wentzien went out with a bang, as the senior connected on five 3-pointers and led Gladbrook-Reinbeck with a career-high 20 points to go along with five steals. Amber Berendes had a career-high 13 points, Nicole Adair added 10 points and five rebounds while Taylor Flamme had eight points and five boards. Emily Snider contributed seven points and five assists for the Rebels (8-14), who lost their third straight.
In other 2A Region 3 action, North Tama (10-11) handed Iowa Valley (15-7) its third straight loss, 55-37, to advance to Tuesday’s round at No. 8 West Marshall.
AGWSR defeated BCLUW for the third time in as many meetings, winning 58-21 in Ackley. For BCLUW (1-20), Olivia Callaway led with nine points while Nicolette Simpson had four and Kodi Marks three.
AGWSR (14-7) will meet its former head coach in Bruce Dall and the Dike-New Hartford Wolverines (15-6) on Tuesday in Dike.
CMB used a 19-8 third-quarter advantage to put away East Marshall, 59-44, in Saturday’s Class 3A Region 6 quarterfinal game.
Abbie Haupert scored a season-high 33 points on 14-of-20 shooting to lead the Raiders (9-14) to victory. Shelby Berg put up a triple-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, while Lexi Breon added 11 points.
East Marshall (4-18) did not report.
CMB advances to face 13th-ranked Mid-Prairie (16-6) which defeated South Tama 54-40 in Wellman. The Hawks were led by Mariah Swartzentruber’s 21 points, but needed to outscore South Tama 13-4 in the final quarter to put the Trojans away for good.
STC ended its season at 11-11.
Tenth-ranked Nevada eliminated South Hardin (8-14) with a 60-29 victory in Saturday’s Class 3A Region 3 quarterfinals. The Cubs (18-4) will host Iowa Falls-Alden in Wednesday’s semifinals.
