Crash kills Grundy Center woman, injures two

A crash just outside Parkersburg on Highway 14 killed a Grundy Center woman and injured two others early Sunday morning.

Grundy County Sheriff Rick Penning said Deann Eilers, 44, of Holland, lost control of her 1989 Jeep Grand Cherokee just before 1:30 a.m. on an ice-covered road in 11,000 mile of Highway 14, about three miles south of Parkersburg.

Eilers and three passengers – Sheila Cole, 44, Harvin Rust, 49, and Susan Halbach, 48, all of Grundy Center – were returning from a show at an area bar when the Jeep spun from the road and careened into ditch, striking a utility pole, killing Cole and injuring Rust and Eilers, Penning said.

Cole was in the rear driver’s seat at the time of the collision. The Grundy County Medical Examiner pronounced her dead at the scene. The crash totaled the Jeep.

Deputies will continue to investigate the crash, but Penning said there is no immediate evidence to suggest that alcohol was involved. The speed limit on the rural road is 55 mph, and he said Eilers was likely traveling slower than that.

Paramedics transported Eilers to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. She was no longer a patient at the hospital as of Sunday afternoon. Rust was transported to Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Staff there would not release any information on Rust’s condition at press time.

Halbach was uninjured.

Parkersburg Police Department, Fire Department and ambulance and Sartori paramedics assisted the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.
