School board votes to let West Marshall wrestle

STATE CENTER – By a 6-to-1 vote at its monthly meeting Monday night, the West Marshall school board granted the high school wrestling team approval to participate in Wednesday’s state dual meet tournament in Des Moines.

A week after a photograph appeared on social media showing 12 West Marshall wrestlers taunting an opponent with an obscene phrase scrawled on their arms, the Trojans will get to compete in the school’s first-ever state duals tournament. Each of the student-athletes in the photograph were given community service as punishment.

The eighth-seeded Trojans (22-7) will take on top-ranked Alburnett (29-1) in Wednesday’s 11 a.m. quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Dual Team Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.
