Taylor’s Maid-Rite owner set for reality TV realm

Former Marshalltown resident and longtime owner of Taylor’s Maid-Rite, Don Short, is gearing up for what could be reality television stardom.

Short’s Des Moines business, West End Architectural Salvage, will be featured on a new weekly show on HGTV.

The debut episode is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, and the show will air weekly on Thursday nights.

West End brings new life to salvaged household items from across the country and the world. The first episode has Short and his staff spicing up a boring bedroom with reclaimed items, and each show will have them making over a room with these recycled pieces.

Short said his show is more about having fun than being a “How to” type of home improvement show.

“I think it’s going to be more entertaining because we have a lot of fun,” Short said.

Short was approached by a production company more than a year ago with the show idea and with the popularity of antiques on television boosted from shows like Iowa-based “American Pickers” the timing was right for this type of show.

“We hope to expose people to be able to reuse things,” Short said.

The show is set for a 13-episode season with a possibility for another season, but there are no official plans of yet. Short said they are preparing for more visitors to West End as a result of the exposure, but he doesn’t feel the need to make the most out of his 15 minutes of fame.

“I’m pretty happy with my gig right now, so I don’t want it to change,” Short said.

West End Architectural Salvage is located at 22 Ninth St. in Des Moines.
