Bobcats give DM East a tussle in regional defeat
DES MOINES – The first four minutes staked Class 5A No. 4-ranked Des Moines East to a lead that the Marshalltown girls’ basketball team was unable to atone for, and the Bobcats fell 65-36 in Saturday’s Region 3 semifinal.
The Scarlets (20-2) scored their fifth straight win behind a balanced attack, led by Shareece Burrell’s 14 points. Roichelle Marble and Arrica Daye both contributed 10 points, Tal Neilly added nine and Renise Collier had eight.
Des Moines East advances to face Waterloo West in Tuesday’s regional finals after the Wahawks edged Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 66-59. The regional final will be played at Saydel High School.
Marshalltown’s bid for a postseason win was one of its best games of the season. The Bobcats (4-18) scored more than 35 points for the 10th time this season, led by Eisha Oden’s game-high 16 points to go with a team-leading six rebounds.
Lauren Mazour added nine points for the Bobcats.
“I’m very pleased and proud of our girls,” said MHS coach Tim Johnson. “The passion and heart they came out and played with, they were just exhausted.
“They challenged a very quality team.”
