Tigers dealt pair of walk-off setbacks
HARRIMAN, Tenn. – A day after walking all over Roane State for a 15-1 victory, the Marshalltown Community College baseball team surrendered a pair of walk-off wins to the Raiders on Sunday at Williams Field.
Roane State CC scored solo runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings of Sunday’s opener for a 7-6 victory, and the Raiders rallied with two runs in the seventh for a 5-4 triumph in the nightcap.
MCC (1-2) had taken a 6-5 lead with two runs in the sixth frame of game one. Bennett Mann led off with a single and scored on a William Salas single, and Salas scored when Justen Folger’s grounder was misplayed.
But the Raiders tied it back up in the bottom half on an RBI single for Clay Fielden, and Blake Paschal’s two-out single in the seventh plated pinch-runner Alex Dapkus as the game-winner.
Reliever Tyler Moon (0-1) took the loss for the MCC pitching staff for his one inning of work.
Salas, Folger and Daryl Blaskovich each had three hits to lead the Tigers offensively.
In the nightcap, the Tigers led 4-1 after a four-run fifth. Salas drove in Mann with a sacrifice fly, Folger had an RBI single and Tyler Evans scored two more with his hit, but a ground-ball double play ended the rally.
Roane State scored three times to tie it at 4-all, but MCC went back in front when Salas doubled to drive in Luke Whicmann in the top of the sixth.
The Raiders received a leadoff walk to spark their comeback in the seventh, and an error and sacrifice fly followed to give Roane State the 5-4 win.
Reliever Zach Throckmorten (0-1) tossed 2 1/3 innings in the loss. Starter Corey Ceponis struck out seven, walked four and allowed two runs on two hits in four innings.
Folger accounted for two of MCC’s six hits in the loss.
The Tigers travel on to Overland Park, Kan., for this weekend’s games at Johnson County CC.
