SPORTS SHORTS: Welp contributes for Mustangs
LINCOLN, Neb. – BCLUW graduate Jay Welp had a pair of medal-winning finishes for Morningside College at the Great Plains Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.
Welp, a Marcus native and former all-state track and cross country performer for BCLUW, placed second in the 1,000-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 31.71 seconds. He also scored third in the 1,600 in 4:20.24.
Welp also ran the opening leg of the 4×400 relay, which placed fourth in a combined time of 3:20.71. The Mustangs finished second in the team standings.
Iowa’s Ramos honored by Big Ten
CHICAGO – For the third time in his career, Iowa’s Tony Ramos is the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week.
The announcement was made Tuesday coming on the heels of Ramos’ 9-0 major decision over third-ranked A.J. Schopp of Edinboro in Iowa’s 31-6 dual win Saturday.
It is the first time Ramos, a 133-pounder, has received the honor this season and the fifth time for the Hawkeyes more than any other school. Currently ranked second, Ramos is 20-0 overall including a 4-0 mark against ranked opponents this year.
Iowa (19-1, 8-0) returns to the mat this weekend at the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships in Minneapolis. Competition starts Friday at 6 p.m.
