Fundraising dinner to be held Saturday for cancer victim

Friends and family of Sandy McRill are getting behind her in support as the Albion resident deals with endometrial cancer.

They are holding a public fundraising dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Moose Lodge in Marshalltown to help pay for her expenses. McRill is a city carrier with the post office in Marshalltown.

“We’re all good friends, and we treat each other like family and saw the need,” said Karen Hines, McRill’s co-worker at the post office and friend. “She doesn’t ask for anything, but we know she would do it for us.”

The event will include a beef burger dinner, raffle and bake sale. The cost of the dinner will be a free-will donation. The raffle will feature several gift cards from area businesses.

“We’ve had good support,” Hines said.

Hines said there is no set goal for money to be raised for the benefit, but she hopes for a good crowd at the Moose Lodge.

“We hope people see the need,” she said. “It should be a good time.”

McRill was diagnosed with Stage 3 endometrial cancer in June 2012 and has been through several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation.

“She is showing improvement,” Hines said. “Her attitude has been pretty good, and she hasn’t let it get her down.”
