Former West Marshall standout slated for IHCC Hall induction

OTTUMWA – A former West Marshall High School standout student-athlete will be inducted into the Indian Hills Commumity College Athletic Hall of Fame this weekend.

Karen (Smith) Malloy will be one of six inductees honored at halftime of Saturday night’s men’s basketball game between Indian Hills and Marshalltown Community College. There will also be a reception for the class of inductees immediately following the game.

Malloy was a two-time softball All-American at Indian Hills in 1998 and 1999. She was a first-team all-region and first-team All-American outfielder for the Indian Hills program, which put together a combined 129-12 record in her two years.

She still ranks in the top five in seven offensive categories, standing among the school’s career leaders in at-bats, doubles, triples, runs scored and total bases. Malloy also boasts top-five single-season performances for doubles and triples.

Malloy went on to play at Simpson College in Indianola, where she helped the Storm gain a national tournament berth in her junior campaign. She was a first-team all-Iowa Conference, all-region and All-American as a senior.

During her time at West Marshall, Malloy was a standout softball, basketball, track and cross country performer. As a Trojan senior softball player in 1997, Smith was a Class 1A first team all-state selection after hitting .471 with 18 doubles, two triples, a home run and 34 RBIs. She scored 26 runs and stole 11 bases.
