Tritz hits 1,000, Creighton holds off Panther women

CEDAR FALLS – Creighton junior Carli Tritz scored six points to surpass 1,000 for her career and the Bluejays held off Northern Iowa for a 73-66 win in Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball Thursday at the McLeod Center.

Creighton (19-6, 11-3) stayed one game back of Wichita State in the MVC standings behind game-highs of 19 points and eight rebounds for Sarah Nelson. Marissa Janning added 17 points before fouling out and McKenzie Fujan had 14.

The Jays led for the final 32 minutes of this game, taking the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Ballard of Huxley grad Sammy Jensen, 15-13. Janning followed with a trey of her own and Creighton never trailed again.

Tritz, a Sioux City Bishop Heelan grad, became the 24th member of the 1,000-point club in Creighton history.

Brittni Donaldson scored 14 points to lead Northern Iowa (12-13, 7-6), while Sioux City North grad Jacqui Kalin added 13 points and five assists.

The Panthers are back at it Saturday when the host Drake at 2 p.m.
