Opera for the little ones

TAMA – Opera just isn’t for grown ups any more.

Opera Iowa brought its “The Three Little Pigs” show Friday to South Tama Elementary School.

“I think they are really excited for this,” said Principal Jim Bugge prior to the show. “It’s a new experience for the students.”

Between the big voices belting through the gym, there were plenty of laughs from the young students to the dialogue.

The students were also part of the show, singing a song they have been rehearsing for several days called “March of the Piggy Carpenters.”

The show tells the classic tale utilizing the music of Mozart, arranged by John Davies. The opera performers were from Ohio, Texas, New Jersey, South Carolina, New Jersey and even Taiwan.

South Tama music teacher Marilyn Rippy has been amazed in the level of interest in opera from her students right from the start. They not only worked on their song but have watched clips of opera to prepare them for show the past few weeks.

“The kids have really gotten into it,” Rippy said.

Rippy said the school is fortunate to land a stop from Opera Iowa. The trip was rescheduled from a previous snowstorm. She said many of these students would not be exposed to an opera show if it wasn’t for this school performance.

“This is a great experience for them to see a show for free at their school,” Rippy said.
