Chinese restaurant damaged by fire
The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a call of a restaurant on fire at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Upon arrival at the China Buffet, 2500 S. Center St., crews saw heavy smoke billowing from the roof. The crews determined the fire was between the ceiling and the roof above the restrooms in the main dining area, said Capt. Tim Hillygus with the MFD.
“We had it under control within 15 to 20 minutes,” Hillygus said.
Firefighters were on scene sawing into the roof to try to locate the fire.
“There’s a lot of damage, not so much fire damage, but there will be a lot of water damage,” Hillygus said.
Chief Steve Edwards said the restaurant owner and staff were eating and two to three customers were there when the fire broke out. Everyone made it out fine and there were no injuries reported.
Traffic on Center Street was rerouted for several minutes as crews attended to the fire.
