Local forum to highlight women managing finances

You don’t have to be rich to attend the Women & Philanthropy Forum.

“It is about understanding and managing wisely,” said Bettie Bolar, co-chair for organization efforts for the forum. “That can be for any age group, any economic level.”

The forum will be held at Iowa Valley Continuing Education 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 19 in the conference center, Room 612.

Johni Hays, vice president of Thompson & Associates, will give a talk titled “The 7 Secrets for Women to Enhance & Protect Wealth.” Hays has been practicing law in the charitable and estate planning arena for 20 years. She lectures nationally on those subjects as well as probate, living wills, annuities, life insurance, retirement planning, IRAs and income, state and gift taxation.

Women of all ages can benefit, Bolar said. Young women who are new to the job market often need help learning to manage their finances. And often, she said, married women take on researching charitable donations for their family, and those who have lost a spouse can find themselves ignorant as to how best to juggle income.

“Many of them just need some background and information,” Bolar said. “What we are hoping they walk away with is good knowledge and better understanding and confidence to better understand and manage their finances.”

Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation, Community Foundation of Marshall County, Iowa Valley Continuing Education, Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center, MMSC Foundation, YMCA/YWCA Heritage Club and SagePoint Financial are sponsoring the forum.

Although, many non-profits are sponsoring the forum, Bolar said participants will not be solicited for donations. Organizers just want women to be wise about where they choose to put their money.

Hays will offer insights on how to take advantage of tax advantages for civic efforts.

The forum is open to the public. A $10 fee is due at registration, and reservations must be made by April 12. Lunch is provided, and those with dietary restrictions are asked to indicate those restrictions when they register. To make reservations, call Julie Thomas at Iowa Valley Continuing Education at 641-752-4645. The course number is CPD 4701 001.
