Husband of slain Boone woman charged with murder
BOONE – A Boone man whose wife had filed for divorce killed the woman then told police she overdosed on prescription pills, according to an affidavit released Monday by Iowa investigators.
The arrest of Alexander Fazzino, 39, a day earlier came more than a year after Emily Fazzino, 32, was found naked and unresponsive on a bathroom floor in the couple’s house. He has been charged with first-degree murder.
A warrant for Alexander Fazzino’s arrest was issued Friday, and he was detained Sunday at the parking lot of a Kansas City-area sporting goods store. He remains at the Lee’s Summit Police Department jail in Missouri on a $1.5 million bond and court records do not show if he has an attorney.
A message left for the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was not immediately returned Monday.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said in the affidavit that Alexander Fazzino wasn’t getting along with his wife at the time of her Jan. 29, 2012, death. Officers had responded to a domestic dispute report from the couple’s house a week earlier. Emily Fazzino filed for divorce the day after that, and her husband filed for full custody of the couple’s three children.
Emily Fazzino told her father on the day of her death that she was scared to go home and be alone with her husband, according to the affidavit.
Police found the woman unresponsive in the bathroom of the master bedroom after Alexander Fazzino called 911 and told a dispatcher his wife was trying to kill herself. He said he found her face down in the tub, and placed her on the floor.
He later told police his wife overdosed on prescription pills, though he didn’t have an explanation about bruises found on her body, according to the affidavit.
The Iowa Medical Examiner’s Office said Emily Fazzino’s remains had no sign of drug abuse or a drug overdose. Her autopsy identified several areas of trauma, including the neck, throat, and several areas of the head.
