Valley leaves little for MHS boys’ netters

WEST DES MOINES – The one win was a statement victory for the Marshalltown boys’ tennis team.

Ryan Shomo swept Valley’s Ryan Peterson in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, to account for the Bobcats’ only point in Tuesday’s 7-1 West Des Moines Valley victory. The dual meet was shortened by rain as the final three doubles matches were not finished when the event was called off.

Peterson placed sixth at the Class 2A state singles tournament a season ago, proving Shomo’s readiness for his senior season. Shomo joined Derek Platt as state doubles qualifiers two seasons ago but was unable to advance in singles last season.

Little else on Tuesday went the Bobcats’ way. Valley took the other five singles matches in straight sets, as well as the two doubles bouts that managed to finish.

Marshalltown will return to action Saturday with the Bobcat Invite, which brings Ames, Fort Dodge, Mason City and Southeast Polk to the MHS tennis courts for the 9 a.m. tournament.
