Field events power STC girls to third-place finish
DES MOINES – Led by strong performances in the field events, the South Tama County girls’ track team placed third at the Saydel Invitational on Saturday.
The Trojans went 1-2 in the shot put and long jump, scored 46 of their 97 points in the field events and trailed runner-up Saydel by just one point in the final standings.
Des Moines Christian won the meet with 106 points, followed by Saydel (98), STC (97), Interstate 35 (79), and North Polk (70) rounding out the top five.
Samantha Holtz grabbed two first-place finishes as she won both the shot put and discus, Shelby Bradley won individual gold as did the 4×800-meter relay team.
Holtz’s winning throw in the shot put was marked at 32 feet, 5 3/4 inches, while Kaleigh Sieck was second at 29-8 1/4. Bradley leaped 14-9 1/4 to win the long jump and Riley Craun was second with a mark of 14-3 1/2. Holtz also won the discus with a toss of 113-10.
The winning 4×800 team of Trisha Walz, Maddie Bacon, Taylor Ellenbecker and Naomi Hoskey won in 11 minutes, 40.69 seconds.
Bacon and Paige Balvin both scored big points in the 400 by finishing 2-3, respectively. Bacon (1:07) and Balvin (1:07.32) scored 14 team points. Balvin also was fourth in the 400 hurdles.
