Police release name of boy found on bike path
Police have confirmed that a boy found unresponsive on the bike path near 12th Avenue and Nevada Street Friday night is Manuel Guillen, 14, of Marshalltown.
A passerby spotted the boy lying on the path just before 10 p.m. and called police, according to Capt. Chris Jones, with the Marshalltown Police Department. When first responders arrived, Guillen was unresponsive. EMTs transported him to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center where doctors later pronounced him dead.
Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper previously said he is unaware why the boy was walking alone on the bike path at night.
The investigation of the incident will continue, but, according to Jones, police have no reason to suspect foul play. An underlying medical condition is believed to be the cause of death, but police will not know until the medical examiner completes the autopsy.
Services for Guillen will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Mitchell Family Funeral Home, 1209 Iowa Ave. W.
According to the Marshalltown School District’s Facebook page, Guillen was an eighth grader at Miller Middle School.
