Spartans handcuff MCC softball twice
CRESTON – Mustering just one run and six hits on the day, the Tigers’ usually prolific offense was tamed by Southwestern Tuesday.
The Marshalltown Community College softball team produced just three hits in a 9-0 opening game loss, before tallying three more in a 2-1 setback for the nightcap.
The Spartans used a six-run surge in the fourth frame to win the first game in five innings.
Marisa Basham, Brooke Dunkin and Erin Huffaker tallied the Tigers’ lone hits, while Taylor Vaske took the loss allowing nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits over four frames. Vaske struck out two and walked one.
Courtney Wagner picked up the win tossing five shutout innings on three hits, while fanning eight batters.
Ashley Strong’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth broke a 1-1 tie, securing the sweep for the Spartans in game two. Erica White led the Tigers batting 2-for-3 with a run scored as MCC (6-8, 11-17-1) was again limited to just three hits. Hailee Beals had the Tigers’ other base hit, while Alexis Farren drove in a run.
Stacy Roggentein was saddled with the loss allowing two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out four and walking two in six innings. Wagner won again for the Spartans tossing a three-hit, one-run complete game, while fanning five batters and walking five.
The Tigers host DMACC in a twinbill today beginning at 3 p.m.
