Tigers’ tussle with DMACC falls just short

BOONE – Jumping in front of one of the nation’s best, the Tigers couldn’t keep the Bears from clawing back in a pinch Tuesday.

Leading 7-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Marshalltown Community College men’s baseball team had no answer for a late rally from NJCAA Division II No. 2 ranked DMACC, losing 8-7 in 10 innings on the road.

Pinch runner Dalton Leuschke scored the winning run on pinch hitter Tyler Wolfe’s one-out RBI single to shallow left center field. Leuschke came in for Charlie Coghlin, who started the inning with a single, before advancing to second on a wild pitch from Taylor Moon.

Moon took the loss for MCC (13-14) allowing one earned run on four hits, while striking out one and walking none in 1 and 2/3 innings. Ben Larpenter won in relief allowing one earned run on five hits in six frames. Larpenter retired two batters on strikes and didn’t issue a walk.

After putting up two runs in the seventh, the Bears (29-5) made their move in the eighth with four more, including an RBI single from Molitor and a two-run double by pinch hitter Steve Serratore.

Wolfe batted 2-for-2 with and RBI and run scored, while Serratore was 1-for-2 and drove in 3 runs.

The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third and stretched the margin to 6-1 in the fifth, before adding an insurance run in the seventh.

Ty Russell (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI) and William Salas (2-for-5, 2 runs and an RBI) paced MCC at the plate, while Justen Folger and Tyler Evans each plated a run. Allen Austin batted 1-for-3 and scored twice.

Russell nearly cleared the bases in the fifth plating Allen and Salas on a double, though Daryl Blaskovich was thrown out at home.
