Tigers score split with No. 3 Iowa Western
COUNCIL BLUFFS – Ron Gombos’ strong effort on the mound was good enough to beat nationally ranked Iowa Western Community College in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday.
And the Tigers’ timely hits at the plate carried MCC to the win as the Marshalltown Community College baseball team earned a split against the Reivers, winning the opener 5-2 and losing the nightcap 13-3 in five innings.
The games were originally scheduled to be played at Shawn Williams Field in Marshalltown but got moved because of poor field conditions.
The Tigers took Game 1 despite collecting just five hits and committing five errors. MCC (14-15, 6-8) had 13 errors in the two games and Iowa Western out-hit the Tigers 18-10.
Gombos nearly finished the win himself in the opener as he got all but one out, striking out four while allowing just two runs and eight hits. Zach Throckmorten got the final out to add to his team-high in saves.
Tyler Evans led the Tigers at the plate with two hits, while Justen Folger was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Folger’s double in the first inning gave the Tigers an early advantage and MCC never looked back. The lead grew to 3-0 in the second as the Tigers chased Iowa Western starter Robert Youngdahl without getting an out in the second frame.
The Tigers made it 4-0 in the fourth as Marshalltown High School graduate Bennett Mann scored on a sacrifice fly by William Salas. Mann scored two runs in the game.
Iowa Western scored one run in the fourth to make it 4-1 and then cut the Tiger lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get any closer. The Tigers scored their final run in the seventh off an Iowa Western error.
The Reivers didn’t give MCC much of a chance in the second game. Iowa Western (34-8, 12-2) jumped all over Ryder in the opening frame and never looked back. The Reivers recorded three hits, walked twice and scored on two passed balls while MCC committed four errors in the frame.
The Tigers scored one run in the second and two more in the fourth, but the Reivers scored in all four of their at-bats, including four more runs in the fourth to end it early in five innings.
The four runs came on just two hits but MCC committed three more errors and walked another hitter. The two runs plated by MCC in the top of the fourth came on a two-run double by Andrew Utterback. He was 2-for-2 for MCC, while Ty Russell, Folger and Evans each scored a run and Luke Wichmann added an RBI.
Ryder took the loss but Richard England also allowed four runs and Tanner Smith surrendered three runs (one earned) in the Tiger defeat.
Adam Morey homered for Iowa Western, and Kaden Moore had two hits and three RBIs and David Parrett scored three runs and knocked in two runs in the Reiver win.
The same two teams play today in Council Bluffs with the twinbill starting at 1 p.m.
