Spartans edged for own invite title, Rebels third

GRUNDY CENTER – Host Grundy Center was edged by one stroke for the team title at its annual Spartan Invitational Saturday morning at Town & Country Golf Club.

The Spartans shot a 172 team total as Roland-Story finished one stroke lower with 171 for the team crown. The Norsemen had the day’s only two sub-40 rounds as Evan Johnson shot 1-over-par 37 and Tavender Jones carded a 3-over 39 to lead R-S to victory.

Five of Grundy Center’s rounds were good enough to make the all-tournament team (top 12), and four of them were 44 or better, but it wasn’t enough to get the Spartans to the top of the eight-team event.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck was third with its 181, while BCLUW and GMG tied for fourth place with 204 totals.

Grundy Center’s consistent scoring rounds came from Lane Bangasser and Sam Thompson at 42, and Elliott Eggleston and Ryon Appel at 44.

G-R’s Jacob Smoldt was the third overall finisher with his 40, as all four of the Rebels’ scoring rounds were all-tournament worthy too. Austin Harris shot 46, Logan Koester a 47 and Bradon Trepp 48.

GMG’s Chad Plaehn picked up eighth place in the individual race with his round of 45. Bridger Claassen was next best for the Wolverines with a 51, followed by Ryan Spurlin (52) and Luke Petty (56).

Lucas Schmitt of BCLUW just missed all-tournament team honors with his team-leading round of 49. Tyler Smith and Collin McAteer both shot 51, and Grant Frazer rounded it out for the Comets with a 53.
