Community Foundation hands out nearly $100K in grants

The checks were signed, they were sealed – and on Tuesday night – they were delivered.

The Community Foundation of Marshall County handed out $99,882 in grants during its annual ceremony Tuesday.

The money is awarded by the foundation committee and is a result of state gambling revenues and endowments to the foundation. Local agencies and organizations apply for the grants with a total of 33 checks were handed out Tuesday night at Dejardin Hall on the campus of Marshalltown Community College.

“We know that these grants will have a great impact on the community,” said Bettie Bolar, development associate with the foundation.

The Albion Library got $3,500 to give it a boost in its goal to become automated.

“The library is not automated yet, and the end goal is to become automated,” said Director Julia Ohrt. “There’s some computer technology that needs to be upgraded first. This grant is very significant and allows us to move forward with the project.”

The Marshalltown Football League received $1,000 to buy new, safer helmets to increase the safety level for its players. MFL President Nick Loney said they continually have a need to upgrade equipment, and this grant helps them a great deal.

“Our main focus is the safety of the kids,” Loney said.

The Linn Creek Arts Festival walked away with a $5,000 grant to go toward the summer event.

A total of $7,000 was given to the program, which provides swim lessons to children in fifth grade. The program started after the drownings last summer in the Iowa River as a way to increase water safety and education for area children.

The biggest grant of the night went to the “Spread the Words – Read by 3rd” initiative as the group received a $9,782 check. The money will be used to purchase books to be given out at a variety of events to help boost reading levels of young elementary students.

“The committee decided to put an emphasis on literacy and education projects this year,” Bolar said.
