SPORTS SHORTS: Royals hold off GMG, NEH golfers

COLO – Colo-NESCO used its home-course advantage to defeat GMG and Northeast Hamilton in an Iowa Star Conference boys’ golf triangular Thursday at Twin Anchors Golf Club.

The Royals’ Zach Risdal shot a 6-over-par 40 to take medalist honors ahead of GMG’s Chad Plaehn (41), and Colo-NESCO shot 184 as a team. GMG finished with a 193 and the Trojans shot 200.

Cole Ozbun shot 46 for the Royals, followed by Steve Alley (48) and Isaiah Texeira (50) to round out the team score.

Plaehn was followed by Kenan Hall (50), Austin Vaughn (51) and Luke Petty (51) for GMG.

Logan Seiser led Northeast Hamilton with a 42, the third-best overall round.

GMG was the only one of the three to field a full girls’ team, carding 245. Shannon Fleming was the meet medalist with a 53 and Lexie Dubberke shot 55 to lead the Wolverines. Olivia Barritt (64) and Summer Langenbau (73) rounded out the team score.

Samantha Prather, Colo-NESCO’s only golfer, shot 70, while Leah Meyer led Northeast Hamilton with a 69.

Cougars shoot down BCLUW boys

ACKLEY – The AGWSR boys’ golf team hoarded all the hardware with a dual win over BCLUW Thursday at Meadowbrook Golf Course, shooting 177 to the Comets’ 207.

Kody Boheman had a 7-over-par 42 to lead AGWSR, while Hunter Wagner was runner-up medalist with a 44. Owen Abkes (45) and Carsen Lutterman (46) completed the Cougars’ scoring.

The Comets were led by Collin McAteer and Tyler Smith, both of whom shot 49. Grant Frazer finished out with a 50 and Lucas Schmitt shot 59.

Tiger netters blank Union girls

ELDORA – The South Hardin girls’ tennis team steamrolled Union Community to the tune of a 9-0 sweep on Thursday.

The Tigers (2-2) swept through singles play with Ellen Swartz improving to 4-0 at the No. 1 position with a 10-1 victory over Leah Jungling. Katie Branch, Mikayla Fisher, Hannah Reifschneider, Shannon Teske and Shelby Smith also collected singles wins.

Teske and Kailey Richard posted the most convincing of three doubles wins for the Tigers, prevailing 10-0 at the No. 3 spot.

Mustang girls top Spartan Invite

GRUNDY CENTER – Winning four events and tallying runner-up finishes in six more, the East Marshall girls’ track team claimed the title with 142 points at the Spartan Girls Invitational Thursday.

BCLUW (122) finished 17 points ahead of Dike-New Hartford for second, while the host Spartans took fourth (100). Jesup (98) edged North Tama (96) for fifth, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck took seventh (16) out of eight squads.

Ashley Allen won the discus with a heave of 82 feet, 8 inches, and Madisen Hinegardner broke the tape in the 400-meter hurdles in 1 minute, 13.06 seconds for the Mustangs. Hingardner teamed with Theresa Hatch, Meriel Leavy and Kelsea Anderson on the winning 4×100 (54.71), while Hatch and Anderson joined Paige Miller and Haley Fye to take the distance medley (4:37.09).

Miller took silver in the 3,000 in 11:30.92 and 800 (2:36.02), before Fye claimed second in the 400 hurdles (1:14.77). Katie Roseland was runner-up in the 100 hurdles, while Taia Veren and Leavy tied for second in the high jump at a height of 4-6.

No other individual results were available by press time.

NICL West boys’ golf event moved

The North Iowa Cedar League’s West Division boys’ golf tournament has announced a change in location.

The conference meet will no longer be held at Oak Leaf Country Club in Reinbeck due to course construction. The NICL West tournament, still scheduled for May 16 at 10 a.m., be played at Town & Country Golf Club in Grundy Center.

The NICL West girls’ event is still slated to be played at Oakwood Golf Course in Conrad.
