Region XI softball reaches tentative schedule
The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference has announced its bracket for the NJCAA Region XI Softball Tournament, but with a tentative schedule hinging entirely on the playing conditions in Fort Dodge.
A teleconference was held Wednesday involving ICCAC Commissioner Thom McDonald and the conference’s coaches to determine the best course of action considering the forecast for wintry weather to return to northwest Iowa.
Weather-permitting, the eight-team tournament will begin on Sunday with its traditional double-elimination format and run through Tuesday. If playing conditions force the start of the tournament to be delayed to Monday, all first-round games will become elimination games with a standard double-elimination format from the semifinals on.
Marshalltown Community College (20-22, 15-13) earned the fourth seed in the final ICCAC Division II standings and will take on NIACC (14-18, 9-15), the fifth seed, in their opening-round contest. The game will be played either Sunday at 1 p.m. or Monday at 2 p.m., depending on playing conditions at Harlan Rogers Sports Complex.
MCC took three of four from the Trojans during the regular season.
Third-ranked Kirkwood (48-3) earned the top seed for the tournament after finishing the ICCAC D-II schedule with an unbeaten record of 28-0, while No. 6-ranked DMACC (35-7, 22-6) is seeded second.
If the tournament can not be completed Tuesday, the highest remaining seed will advance.
