Vaughn nets golden goal in OT victory

MASON CITY – The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team continues to search for that one game where everything comes together.

While they didn’t find it on Thursday night, the Bobcats still had enough to pick up a win.

Lexi Vaughn’s goal eight minutes into overtime gave Marshalltown a 2-1 victory over Mason City in a Central Iowa Conference Northern Division match, boosting the Bobcats to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Megan Major assisted on the golden goal, which handed Mason City (2-7, 0-2) its seventh consecutive loss and completed Marshalltown’s comeback from a 1-0 halftime deficit.

“I think this game was a test of character,” said Bobcat coach Allie Osmundson. “We were down a goal at half and not playing our best but we still found a way to win.

“I am proud of the team for continuing to fight and glad we were able to get the win.”

Lindsay Ricken scored the equalizer for MHS during the second half, and goalkeeper Amanda Hughes pitched a shutout after the break.

“We need to continue to work so we can put a complete game together,” Osmundson added.

The win was Marshalltown’s first during overtime this season. The Bobcats will try to carry that momentum over to their next outing, Tuesday’s home game against Class 3A No. 10 West Des Moines Valley. MHS also hosts Des Moines Roosevelt next Thursday.
