Kids to Parks Day returns to Riverview Park

With the success of last year’s Kids to Parks Day, Marshalltown Parks and Recreation will again hold the outdoor celebration.

Terry Gray, parks and recreation director, said roughly 250 children and their families attended the 2012 Kids to Parks Day. The celebration will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18 at Riverview Park.

“It was very well-received, so much so we wanted to make sure we had it again this year,” Gray said.

This year’s festivities will include events from last year such as the Marshalltown Police Department’s bike rodeo, disc golf, basketball and tennis demonstrations.

The MPD’s newest K-9 unit, Raji, will also be on hand.

Kingdom Klowns will provide face painting and balloon animals, and hula hooping will add another fun element to the day, Gray said.

New this year is the story walk where the pedestrian trails will have a page of a book displayed on a large wooden plaque periodically throughout, and kids can follow the story as they go for a leisurely stroll, Gray said.

A chain saw artist, commissioned by parks and rec. and sponsored by JBS, will finish his Three Little Pigs and Big Bad Wolf tree sculpture.

Just as last year, Hy-Vee will provide bottled water and Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center will provide the first 500 kids with a plastic flying disc. Other prizes will also be available.

Gray said registration will be held outdoors near the tennis courts instead of in the shelter house.

“We are hoping for a nice day,” Gray said. “If we have a day half as nice as last year, we will be in good shape.”

Signs will be posted directing drivers where to park. For more information, call 641-754-5715 or visit
