Grundy Center cruises in Class 1A regional

CONRAD – Placing five in the top seven, the Grundy Center girls golf team continued its march toward state by dominating the field in the Class 1A Region 3A meet at Oakwood Golf Course Monday.

The Spartans tallied a winning team total of 362 – finishing 117 strokes ahead of runner-up Southeast Webster.

Josie McMartin carded an 11-over 86 for medalist honors, while teammate Baylie Wrage was three strokes back.

GMG’s Shannon Fleming fired the low round of the day with a 38 on the back nine to place third at 90. Grundy Center’s Hillary Samo (92) and Southeast Webster’s Kelsey Travis (94) wrapped up the individual qualifier quintet.

The Wolverines finished third at 492, while Colo-NESCO’s McKenna Farren shot a 115 to lead the Royals to fourth (523). Ankeny Christian rounded out the group at 545. Northeast Hamilton, Madrid and Belmond-Klemme also competed but did not have enough members to field a score.

Lindsay Freeman turned in a 95 to complete the Spartans’ team tally. GMG’s Olivia Barritt and Summer Langenbau both shot a 127 and Lexie Dubberke added a 148.

Zoee Risdal and Allison Grisinger each tallied 133s for the Royals and Madison Farren completed the scoring quartet with a 142.

Grundy Center and Southeast Webster will compete at the Class 1A Region 3 Final Monday at Clarksville Area Recreational Development. The top two teams and top five individuals advance to the Class 1A State meet at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown May 28-29.

The Spartans are seeking their ninth straight state meet appearance after a runner-up finish at the season finale last year.

Redhawks advance in 2nd

TRAER – The North Tama girls’ golf team advanced out of its own Class 1A first-round regional tournament on Monday, posting the runner-up score in the Region 3B meet at Traer Golf and Country Club.

The Redhawks, led by Jayde Vogeler’s round of 104, secured a place in next Monday’s Region 3 finals at Clarksville with their 428 team total.

The race was truly for second place as Wapsie Valley won with a 401, led by three of the top four individual scores. Behind North Tama was Clarksville (430) and Rockford (431).

Gladbrook-Reinbeck was a distant fifth (467), while Meskwaki Settlement was eighth (792).

Comets denied at Dike

DIKE – Dike-New Hartford posted six of the top nine scores and the Wolverines roasted the competition in the Class 2A Region 3B girls’ golf tournament they hosted Monday at Fox Ridge Golf Course.

Led by the top three overall individuals, Dike-New Hartford had a 356 team score to win by 37 strokes. Pella Christian finished with a 393 to join the Wolverines in advancement to next Monday’s regional finals at Marengo. Woodgward-Granger (412) and BCLUW (431) were among the teams chasing them.

The only other regional final qualifier not on the top two teams was Van Meter’s Allison Ridgeway, who came in fifth overall with her round of 94.

Bri Weber (84), Ashley Dumler (86) and Emma Henze (90) led Dike-New Hartford to the team title. Pella Christian’s Autumn Vos was fourth with a 93.

BCLUW was led by Rebecka Keller’s 105. Shelby Trinkle shot 107, Norah Sams carded a 108, and Molly Pieper completed the Comets’ team scoring with a 111.

Sarah McCoy (114) and Laura Crawford (115) also competed for BCLUW.

Cougars close, no dice

LAKE MILLS – Nashua-Plainfield posted a 363 to dominate the Class 2A Region 4A tournament Monday at Rice Lake Golf Club.

Second place went to Aplington-Parkersburg with a 401, while AGWSR was narrowly denied advancement with its third-place score of 406. None of the Cougars placed in the top five either, ending the team’s season.
