Harris shoots 90, MHS golfers 7th at CIC
ANKENY – MHS sophomore Ashley Harris led a trio of Bobcat girls’ golfer who shot in the 90s at the Central Iowa Conference meet at Otter Creek on Thursday.
Harris fired a 90, Madison Sogge carded a 94 and Kallie Davis finished with a 99 as the Bobcats tied Ames for seventh with a 383.
“We shot our lowest team score of the year today on a course that’s quick to penalize errant shots,” MHS coach Lucas Johnson said. “Over the last few meets, we’ve had someone different step up to deliver their best round of the year and today Madison Sogge did an excellent job keeping her ball in play and avoiding the big numbers that hurt many other rounds on the course today.”
Waukee and defending individual champion Peyton Minear won the tournament as the Warriors shot nearly 20 strokes better than second-place Dowling Catholic.
Minear and Kelsy Shay each fired 77s and Paige Seiser added a 79 as Waukee totaled a 318.
Sarah Splittberger of Dowling Catholic also carded a 77 to share medalist honors and the Maroons finished with a 335. Ankeny was third at 346 and Kali Kerrigan carded a 78 to lead the Hawks.
West Des Moines Valley (351) and Southeast Polk (363) rounded out the top five, while Johnston was sixth with a 378. After Marshalltown and Ames was Fort Dodge (385), Urbandale (386) and Mason City (435).
The Bobcats final scorer was Niccole Wolken’s 100 while Katie Lynch and Natalie Kuehny carded a 103 and 109, respectively.
“We’ve had a regular season we can be proud of and the girls know they’ve gotten better over the course of the year,” Johnson said. “We’re peaking at the right time and I’m looking forward to Monday and the start of postseason play.”
Marshalltown will next play in a Class 4A regional tournament in Marion at Gardner Golf Course.
