Grundy Center goes low for title, 9th trip in a row
CLARKSVILLE – The Grundy Center girls’ golf team posted five of the top nine scores in qualifying for its ninth consecutive state tournament, winning Monday’s Class 1A Region 3 meet at Clarksville Area Recreation Development.
Sophomore Josie McMartin carded three birdies during her medalist round of 81 on the par-72 course. Junior Hillary Samo scored an 86 for the runner-up spot. Senior Baylie Wrage shot 97 and both junior Lindsay Freeman and sophomore Maddy Grineski had a 98.
The Spartans were comfortably out front in the team standings, shooting 362 to earn the state berth. HLV advanced as the second-place team, shooting 395.
Third place went to Wapsie Valley (400), English Valleys was in fourth (423), North Tama took fifth (432) and Southeast Webster-Grand was sixth (459).
North Tama’s Jayde Vogeler shot a personal-best 99 to lead the team. Nichole Jones shot 107, Haley Lunde had 109 and both Mallory Espenscheid and Mallory Owens carded 117 to round out the team score.
GMG’s Shannon Fleming, who qualified for regionals as an individual, finished 18th overall with a round of 104.
